Pete O’Heeron: Tips for Getting Through Graduate School

Pete O’Heeron is the current Chief Executive Officer of SpinalCyte, which is a medical technology company helping those suffering from degenerative disc disease and lower back pain. In order to achieve the status he holds today, he worked hard to achieve both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. Here are some tips for those looking to get through graduate school.

Manage your time wisely. Being in graduate school, this should have been a lessoned well learned during undergrad, but it’s worth remembering. You’re going to be far busier during graduate school than you were during undergraduate school. This means that you’ll need to focus on proper time management more so than ever. This is especially true if you’re working while in school to pay off student debt.

Take good notes. Whether you write them down or type them on your laptop, make sure you can understand them and easily access them for review. You may want to develop a unique shorthand that you can easily understand and so you can write down everything a professor teaches during class. If you commit to taking down notes, you’ll find that studying is a lot less stressful.

Finally, study in groups with your peers. Peer studying will allow you to bounce ideas back and forth with your fellow classmates, and it will give you a reason to ask, answer, and explain the course material. If you can do all three of those things, it’s a safe bet that you have a full grasp of the material being tested.

Pete O’Heeron worked hard in order to earn both his degrees, and he learned a great deal.
